While I await a callback from my union pension people, a response promised via recorded message to be delivered within 24 hours, but now has been nine-plus days and still I wait, it is a good time to put out some News And Views.
NEWS: A video has gone viral of an “Older Man” Chicago Cubs fan smacking a “Younger Man” who at first refused to stand for our National Anthem prior to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field.
VIEWS: This does not horrify me, which is the effect it seems to be having on the wimpy leftists. Such slaps to the back of the head were the sort of thing my “Older Man” was fond of giving to us kids when we forgot our manners. Let the record show that the “Younger Man” dutifully stood after the “Older Man” called him on his lack of respect by cuffing the back of his head. When dealing with young punks, or Iranian zealots, force tends to cut through the crap.
NEWS: Speaking of crap, that is the word English soccer legend Wayne Rooney chose as a commentator to describe the elongated halftime show at the World Cup final Sunday.
VIEWS: Anticipating it would be the sort of “crap” foisted upon us each Super Bowl, I didn’t watch. But, from various reports, Rooney seems to have gotten it right. This unprecedented lengthy halftime display was the price the World Cup had to pay for being held here, along with “hydration” breaks instituted in each half, ostensibly to give players a chance to drink some water, but really about fitting more ads into the broadcast. When pregame and postgame shows are about three or four times as long as the games themselves, you have a problem. But, the magic of digital satellite television allows people to pause the garbage and fast-forward through it. Ah, technology.
NEWS: DISH emailed me Monday about an exciting new channel, DOGTV, available for a brief time at a reduced cost of $2.50 a month.
VIEWS: Continuing on a theme, dog crap. Alas, there was a free preview recently and my wife had tried it on our adopted canine, who suffers separation anxiety any time we leave the house, or the room for that matter. The hype from DISH alludes to programming in colors dogs actually can detect, and soothing audio designed to ease their fears. Considering the stark reality that I already am paying $170 a month for a mishmash of shopping channels, Spanish language TV, various ethnic offerings and assorted other pap, I’m not inclined to add $2.50 to the bill and $4.99 a month after the six-month promotion period. Sorry, Virgil, you just will have to get past your problems by howling and whining when we are gone.
NEWS: Axios reports Democrat Party senior leadership was required to sign non-disclosure agreements before attending a recent meeting on the organization’s finances.
VIEWS: That financial status reportedly included that, through the end of May, the Democrats had $15 million of cash onhand, while owing $18 million. Republicans, meanwhile, were reported to have $125 million with zero debt. I guess there is a cost to the Democrats’ infatuation with communists, socialists, Muslims, illegal immigrants, transgenders, criminals and other, to borrow Shrillary’s word, “deplorables.”
Hold on, the cell is ringing. Dare I dream, the union people calling? No, just more spam.
As you were.
